The population of Iwagi is roughly 2500 people. Like the majority of Japan, the island has an ageing population. This is evident in the declining number of student enrolments at local schools each year. Being members of a small community, the people are generally good natured and friendly. The society is racially homogenous, as is common in rural Japan, and foreigners, especially those of European descent, are likely to attract at least some attention.
